Tip of the week - Christchurch Picture Gallery
Want to do something other than frantic boozing this 8th week? Do what I did and try out the Christchurch Picture Gallery if you haven't already. Sumptuous Italian and Flemish painting - highlights for me were the enigmatic allegory by Filippino Lippi, a haunting oil sketch by Van Dyck and a few paintings by the surprisingly modern-but-baroque Annibale Carracci. And the graphics on display at the moment are bloody brilliant. Above is a sneaky taster. GO!
Free for us students. It's in Christchurch's Canterbury Quad (through the entrance opposite Oriel).

Comma Review: KNUCKLE by David Hare
David Hare's 'Knuckle' is a play suitably apt for today's crisis of City arrogance; parodying film noir and American thrillers in Home Counties setting, it is a commentary on urban blight. A whodunnit with a twist, it is the story of Curly, an arms dealer, who returns to his hometown of Guildford to investigate the disappearance of his sister Sarah, an investigation which leads through labyrinthine deceptions to reveal the casual corruption of our capitalist society.
Ed Holcroft swaggers and postures as Curly, exuding a cool arrogance and worldliness that is only ruffled by his sanctimonious banker father, Patrick (Richard Williams). Curly is a dangerous yet attractive backlash against a civilisation structured on double standards, the silent, well-oiled crimes of respectable City financiers driving him to 'choose guns - the noisiest profession you can find' as he rebels in an show of alcohol, drugs, sex and gun-toting machismo. In Hare's play, nothing is quite what it seems: the promiscuous Sarah is more of an innocent victim in a network of ugly lives, whilst attempts to unravel her disappearance throw up blind alleys and red herrings. As the play progresses it becomes apparent that the real point is not the mystery but the subtext, the well-heeled immorality of Guildford's burghers. Thus when Mrs Dunning (in a delightfully dour portrayal by Rachel Bull) says to Curly that 'words like 'honour' and 'loyalty' mean nothing to your generation', it is a true case of pot and kettle, as it becomes apparent that it is not Curly who is the 'barbarian' but these outwardly decent citizens.
Charlie Mulliner impresses as the gutsy Jenny, the girl who runs the infamous 'Shadow of the Moon' nightclub, and the chemistry between her and Ed Holcroft makes compulsive viewing. Cicely Hadman's careful direction subtly brings this play up to date, drawing out the parallels between the play's exploration of capitalist corruption in the 1970s and the consequences of City arrogance in our own era, whilst still retaining the other-age feel of film noir and the jazzy score of Hare's original. This promises to be a slick and stylishly dark production which will disturb, entertain, and invite reflection upon our own troubled times.

I don't know about you but I'm sick of snow. I for one plan to stay in my room until it melts. For those of you who want to venture out here are some suggestions:
7pm - Imelda May at the O2 academy (that's the new Carling academy which was the new Zodiac for those of you who are as old and crusty as I am). Irish rockabilly-blues-jazz. Tickets are £10.
7pm - Magdalen Film Society presents Death in Venice (1971) and Woman of the Dunes (1964). I know the former is a cracker. Magdalen Auditorium, £3 non-members.
8pm - Pete Fireman at the Free Beer Show, the Cellar. Comedy and Magic - FUNNY HA HA. £7/£5.
8pm - Bryce's Coffee House, New College Red Room. An evening of music, poetry and coffee all FREE. Bring a mug.
9pm - Les Wilson and the Mighty House Rockers. Awesome blues at the Bullingdon Arms. £10.
If you haven't already seen Slumdog Millionaire, it's showing at the Ultimate Picture Palace at 6.15pm and 8.45pm. It will blow your tiny minds.

2pm to 5pmp Hark the Herald Angels Sing! - X-mas-themed 16th-17th century Old Master Drawings (including Tititan & Corregio) at the Christ Church Art Gallery, £2. Bit off-season if you ask us, but there you go.

Since the Keble Dean has banned snowballing on college grounds, at 1.45 Keble the students of the college are to meet at the lodge to head to the Parks and create a SnowDean who is then to be bombarded with snowballs (or shoes/stones/tomatoes if you so wish). If you have any angst hidden away, do join them and unleash it - the erected figure can represent a variety of persons, including your tutor, your ex-girlfriend, or anyone else who you feel deserves to be publicly destroyed. Even me, for not supplying you with enough information on time about the arty events that are hapening in our glorious university.

"Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) was an Oxford mathematician. If he had not written the Alice books (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass), would he have been remembered as a mathematician? What mathematics did he do? How good was it? In this illustrated talk Professor Wilson will outline Dodgson's career as a mathematician and as a figure in Victorian Oxford."

on the precipice
If I was to die right now, suddenly, unexpectedly, and I could crystallise that moment, the one right before allowing the inevitable gravitous force to pull me into its centre, these would be my thoughts:
My dog, Shep, licking my fingers for the traces of pepperoni from my snack earlier, the last living thing to sense my presence on this earth. Your warm breath steaming up the windows on my shoulder blades from which I view you pressed up, hugging my sleepy back.
The things that I have yet to accomplish: completing the shopping run in under 40 minutes, starting my own, hugely successful, internet business, spawned from the simplest, why-didn’t-I-think-of-that germ, gaining the respect of the young guy at the video shop (Why have my video choices been unable to live up to his standards?)
Remembering the shafts of light that I stare(d) at when lost for ideas at my desk, which projected particles and participles upon the very air itself, illuminating everything and nothing of my mind’s thoughts.
And all the bad and evil swooping down upon me, oh the things I’ve done! Thinking of my faults and deficits, as a father, husband, lover, writer, dog-owner, consumer, tv-watcher. Incapable of enjoying the informative and important documentary about third world genocide, flicking over to The Ten Most Insane Cop Chases Ever!. And of fulfilling my proper paternal duties to my daughter, which could only be ruined now I’m about to desert her forever? Forgetting to buy any dog food last week for 3 days in a row and watching him suffer. Guilty, guilty infidelity knocking against my conscience, knowing the consequences and refusing to accept responsibility for them. Still unable to truly feel what I ought.
And did I unload the dishwasher like you asked me to?
